What it does

  • All the buffers

Pulls logcat from every buffer in one pass, so you are not juggling adb flags when a device is acting up.

  • Crashes, ANRs, bugreports

Collects crash and ANR dumps alongside a full bugreport when you need deeper context for a support hand-off.

  • Share zips with redaction

Packages the capture into a zip you can send. Optional privacy redaction strips common personal identifiers before you share.

Version 1.5.0, a portable zip (~3.9 MB). Its SHA-256 hash is below and in SHA256SUMS.txt.

About signing. This release is Python scripts in a zip, so code-signing does not apply the way it does for a Windows installer. Check the file against the published SHA-256 before you unpack or run it. If the hash does not match, delete the file.

Verify a download

A checksum shows the file you got is byte-for-byte the file I published. If the hashes don't match, delete it and don't run it.

PowerShell

# in the folder you downloaded to
Get-FileHash .\adb-log-capture-1.5.0-portable.zip -Algorithm SHA256

Command Prompt

certutil -hashfile adb-log-capture-1.5.0-portable.zip SHA256

macOS / Linux

sha256sum adb-log-capture-1.5.0-portable.zip

Compare the output with the hash in the table above. Case doesn't matter.

How to use it

  1. Download the portable zip below and check its SHA-256.
  2. Unzip it anywhere. Nothing is installed; it only uses the Python standard library, and adb is bundled for Windows.
  3. Turn on USB debugging on the phone, plug it in and accept the prompt on the device.
  4. On Windows, double-click Start ADB Log Capture.bat. Elsewhere, run python bootstrap.py. Run python bootstrap.py --diagnose if the device isn’t found.
  5. Reproduce the problem. Press b for a full bugreport, t for ANR/tombstone traces, s for a share zip.

Release notes

What’s new

  • 1.5.0 · 2026-11-05
Share-zip redaction closes several leaks (extensionless tombstones and ANR traces are now redacted, serials masked in paths, new email/IPv6/ICCID/IMEI patterns); unscrubbable binaries are left out and listed in REDACTION.txt; 50-test stdlib suite.
  • 1.4.1 · earlier
UTF-8 adb decoding on Windows, live logcat starts at session start, Windows crash toast fixed, package filter works.
  • 1.4.0 · earlier
Overlapping ANR/crash incidents are queued, duplicate triggers debounced, ANR traces copied into each incident.

Platform support

  • Windows: supported (bundled adb)
  • macOS, Linux: supported with Python 3.7+ and your own adb
  • Android devices: any with USB debugging enabled
  • Needs Python installed; no other dependencies

Known limitations

  • Python must already be installed; there is no standalone .exe.
  • On recent Android versions some traces (for example /data/anr) may only be readable on debuggable or rooted devices.
  • Redaction covers common identifiers but isn’t a guarantee. Read a share zip before you post it publicly.
  • Screenshots, screen recordings and bugreport zips can’t be scrubbed, so public share zips leave them out.

Download trust. Version 1.5.0, file adb-log-capture-1.5.0-portable.zip (4,112,298 bytes), SHA-256 ec66e02150ea23ecef88b5f7e27569cce083f88c56fd03396a222cf5e7d3e2c2, also in SHA256SUMS.txt. Plain Python source, so you can read every line before you run it.

ADB Log Capture is free. If it saved you a painful support thread, a coffee is appreciated.
